London Walks - Turning Points' - Important Moments In London's Development
Description
Explore four of the big changes which turned a green field site into the City of London we know today. It's a strange place: medieval lanes are lined with some of the tallest buildings in Europe; half a million people work there but there are only 10,000 residents.
Alison's course will help you to understand key moments in the development of the Square Mile by tracing features in the cityscape. The arrival of the Romans starts it off but then inventions, a failed marriage, disasters and the constant need for more trade trigger changes which shape the streets we can walk along today.
1. The Romans and their boom town trading post with luxurious ‘mod cons'.
Meet at the Monument close to Pudding Lane EC4R 9A
2. Printing and Writing - how Fleet Street became the centre of the book and newspaper trade. Meet at the statue of Queen Ann in front of St Paul's Cathedral EC4M 8AD
3. The Great Fire and how life changed afterwards. Meet at the Monument again EC4R 9A
4. The Eastern Cluster - how to make life in tall towers bearable. Meet at the main entrance to 22 Bishopsgate on Bishopsgate EC2N 4BQ
