Upholstery Workshop - Beginners - Term 1

Description


This workshop is open to everyone, including complete beginners. You'll learn basic upholstery skills using traditional techniques such as webbing, adding springs, padding, fitting fabric, and buttoning. description in ''More details'' below before completing your enrolment. You'll work on your own small project, like a chair or stool (please note we cannot store furniture on site). You'll need to bring your own tools to the first session: a wooden mallet, hammer, scissors, Stanley knife, and a straight screwdriver. If you already have any upholstery tools, feel free to bring those too. Materials are not included in the course fee. You'll need to buy your own, but your tutor can help you work out what you'll need. Some items might be available to buy through the College. More information
A course covering both theoretical and practical aspects of upholstery. You will learn how to use upholstery tools and discover the materials, tacks and twines used in traditional upholstery. Basic techniques such as measuring, estimating and cutting top covers, webbing, bridling, springing, temporary tacking, knotting, stitching, dealing with corners, buttoning, finishing techniques, plus essential information and advice. This course is suitable for beginners who will follow a step by step programme to complete a simple project, closely monitored by the tutor. You will cover a headboard and try out different techniques - students should expect that they may need to undo and repeat several steps to get the techniques right if necessary. Please note that you will cover theoretical aspects in the first two sessions, including sourcing your materials and measuring for your project. Practical work will begin in the third week of the course. However, it is important that you attend all sessions. There no storage facilities and learners MUST be able to take their project home every week.

Yes, by agreement with the tutor.

Who is the course for?
This course is for anyone who has an interest in working on a small upholstery project and is new to the subject.

Do I need prior knowledge or experience?
No, this is a beginners course.

How will I learn?
A practical course with a mixture of one to one and small group tuition, demonstration, discussion and questions and answers.

How will my progress be assessed?
You will be assessed informally by your tutor, as part of normal classroom activities. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor.

Is there an external qualification?
No, this is an non-accredited course.

What can I do next?
The progression course after this one is Upholstery Mixed Ability or Workshop. You can continue to improve your skills within further mixed ability courses or progress to further courses at other colleges, including apprenticeships and courses leading to qualifications. Tutor can advise on request.

What do I need to bring?
Please bring hand tools to the first session such as a sharp pair of scissors, pinchers, staple/tack remover, a wooden mallet, an old flat screw driver and a staple gun. We advise the rapid r153 which can be bought at screwfix or tool station. Please bring any other upholstery tools you may have. Any additional equipment/materials requirements for individual projects will be discussed at the first session. You will need to source a wooden headboard, suitable fabric and trimmings to cover your project by the third week of the course. You will also need a pen and notepad at the first session.

Are there any extra costs?
The cost of materials is not included in the course fee. You will be expected to provide all items for your individual project. Some materials may be purchased from the College via the tutor. The tutor will give advice on individual project requirements.

Is there work between sessions?
No, although you may like to work on your project between sessions.
