Description

Join this welcoming mixed ability class to explore a range of quilting techniques while working on a beautiful quilt project. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, you'll be supported to build your skills at your own pace. The quilt design can be adapted to suit different levels, and individual components can also be used to create smaller items such as cushions or table runners. Learners are also welcome to bring their own quilting projects to work on with tutor guidance.

More information
Learn the basics of patchwork, such as what equipment you will need, how to do rotary cutting and which fabrics work best for this craft. You will learn from scratch and be able to make a beautiful quilt. You can also join this course if you are slightly more experienced and want to work on your own project with the support of the tutor.

Can I join late?
Up to week 2 with the agreement of the tutor.

Who is the course for?
This course is for anyone who has an interest in learning the basics of patchwork to make a quilt.

Do I need prior knowledge or experience?
No, this course is suitable for beginners and near beginners.

How will I learn?
A practical session with a mixture of discussion, formal instruction, demonstration and questions and answers.

How will my progress be assessed?
You will be assessed informally by your tutor, as part of normal classroom activities. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor.

Is there an external qualification?
No, this is an non-accredited course.

What can I do next?
On to more advanced patchwork classes, tutor will advise.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring a basic sewing kit, small scissors, needles, thread and thimble (if you use one) plus any patchwork equipment you may have. Notebook and pen. If you wear glasses for close work, bring them to every session. There is a requirement list for this course. There are sewing machines at the centre or you can bring your own. You can also sew by hand. If you do not receive the requirements list prior to the course please contact the college.

Please bring to the first lesson.

  • Scrap fabrics, contrasting or tonal and small scale prints (small scale printed fabric prints, or small scale all over printed fabric patterns)
  • Basic sewing kit
  • Notebook and pen

If you have your own sewing machine, you are welcome to bring it along to the centre but we do have some sewing machines that learners can use in our classrooms.

Are there any extra costs?
Yes, you will need to provide all materials and sewing equipment required for your project. The cost of these is not included in the course fee. The tutor will advise at the first session.

Is there work between sessions?
In order to benefit fully from the course, it is advisable to work on your project between sessions.
