London Walks - South London on Two Levels

Visual of the course

Description

A course of four two-hour walking tours exploring two South London areas: Dulwich and Crystal Palace.
The intention of the course is to show the development of each area over the last two hundred years or so.
It will explore how both areas have emerged from historic London woodland and how geography has influenced
their growth - Crystal Palace being one of the highest points of South London, while Dulwich sits down in the valley.

Along the way, you will hear fascinating stories of historic characters including writers, artists, actors,
explorers and scientists, some of whom arrived in the areas in dramatic circumstances. The tours highlight
both commonalities and differences between the locations, showcase a wide array of architectural styles with
impressive listed buildings, and reveal rich layers of social history.

Join Richard, our tutor, on these engaging walks through South London. The course begins in Dulwich,
considering the origins of the area as the site of a major college and private estate, a retreat for wealthy
city merchant philanthropists, artists and writers, and the location of a distinctive historic toll road.
